Anything you want to add or say about your experiences so far?
I have always wanted to have someone else plan a varied workout schedule for me so I thought Crossfit might be an option. I never thought I could actually stick with anything this long and still be consistent. I also never dreamed I could perform half of the movements I can now without pain!

Tell us a little bit about yourself Vanetta Mayo?
Well, I have 3 brothers, 3 sisters and a mother and father. I am second to the last one. So that makes me the baby girl of the family. All of them including myself are over the age of 30. Now you’re thinking, well dang she looks so young. I like to thank my gene pool for that. I live in La Mesa, Ca. I lived here about 1 year and 8 months. My last residency before I moved here was in Las Vegas, NV. I am a California girl for life. Suga honey ice tea I was born here! I work as treatment nurse at Grossmont post-acute care. Yes, I take care of every ones owies and boo boo’s. I have been a nurse for about 6 years. Working as a nurse has been great so far. I attend Azusa Pacific University full-time. I’m getting my B.S. in Health Sciences. I like all sports except for golf. Can you say boring! I like watching baseball and soccer but only live, if I’m at home watching it just hand me pillow and blanket then say good night. But my favorite sport to watch is football. I am an Oakland Raider fan. I also like to go on road trips. Airplanes I’m not too fond of but I power through it. I just love traveling. I have been to Seattle, Colorado, Las Vegas, Utah, New Mexico, Mexico, Florida, Europe, Japan, and many other places. I sound a little too interesting right! Well damn, why am I single? Moving on.

When did you start doing CrossFit?
I started being a sometimer crossfitter in 2015 when I was living in Las Vegas. Now I’m a consistent crossfitter. Do in it full-time!

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
Initially, when I first started CrossFit, I did not have any goals except for typically losing weight. Then when I had seen people do all these other great movements, immediately I wanted to do them too. So now I wanted to make performance a goal and make the prize weight loss.

What are some of your best memories/ achievements during your time here?
The best memory was when I tried wall walks. I did not think I could do it, but I tried and I did it. It was good feeling. Another time was when I did a handstand on the rings. It was assisted, but scary, but I did it though. My greatest achievement by far is going to CrossFit consistently. The outcome of it has benefit me tremendously.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym?
CrossFit has helped me be more consistent in many things. Like work life, home life, relationships. It has helped in taking better care of myself. I know that I take care of a lot of people. So, I thought, who is going to take care of me. Self-care is the most important care.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit ATR?
Not to worry, you’re in good company. I would also express that I have not experienced a CrossFit that is better than this one! Everyone is wonderful at their job and has the best interests in their athletes.

Favorite Movement/Lift?
My favorite movement is breathing. I love all the lifts!

Least favorite Movement/lift?
As of right now box jumps. I have a case pending on them. Also running and burpees but a burpee is everyone enemy.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?
My very first work out was at a previous CrossFit gym that was scaled and I thought, “well I can do this.” I did my first work out at CrossFit ATR and I almost perished; but I felt like I had forever lasting life.

Something you might not know about me is?
I can sing and I love to dance.

Anything you want to add or say about your experiences so far?
My experience with CrossFit ATR has been wonderful. I love the whole hour that I am there even though I might be out of breath.

I just had a baby and was a few months away from my beach destination wedding! I came to CrossFit ATR to get fit, fast-and I did. I stayed at ATR because of the coaches, the community, and the camaraderie this gym fosters. The coaches truly want to see each of the members here succeed, which they also understand means a different thing to each member. I feel truly lucky to have found such a gem of a box!

I started at ATR in December of 2012 with the sole expectation of temporarily looking good for my upcoming wedding, in February of 2013. At that point I was close to 30lbs overweight and heading towards an unhealthy & unhappy life due to poor lifestyle decisions, work related stress, raising 2 children and feeling like my best days were way behind me and I had just come to terms with that. I had surrendered to the idea that this was as good as it was going to be.

I can’t begin to express how the elite training and advice given to me by Tom, Arturo and Mannie has changed that pathetic scenario. After making it through the first 2 weeks it was evident that a transformation was occurring, and not just physically. After 12 weeks I dropped from 198lbs to 172lbs, the laziness was gone and I felt like I was 25 again (I’ll be 40 next year.) A confidence I had not felt in 10 years came back with a fury and my personal and professional life exploded in a positive way that I never expected.

What started off as a 12 week boot camp strictly for vanity reasons has turned into an almost 3 year lifestyle change. Words can’t express the effectiveness of the ATR program/coaches and their support. I cringe at the thought of what I’d be like today if I did not take that first step.

I made the switch to CrossFit ATR prior to my wedding in early 2014. Three months post marriage, I was pregnant and still working out strong. The coaches were pretty incredible through my 9 months of pregnancy and I’m happy to say I was at Crossfit ATR working out days before I delivered. 5 months post-partum I can’t begin to tell you quickly my body bounced back. It was really awesome that the coaches worked with me on my personal path during the whole process. During group workouts, Tom would watch me and track my progress. Arturo and Manny modified each of my workouts so I could continue to participate. Tom had a good understanding of my body, post-partum and all the coaches would make sure I was progressing without hurting myself. The staff is great and all the athletes are just as awesome and supportive of one another; it is a true family community at ATR.

CrossFit ATR has been my home for almost 3 years now. The coaches love what they do and they genuinely care about their classes. Because the coaches care, the members are successful. I also love the energy in this gym. The members are welcoming and helpful toward one another. Everyone cheers for each other while keeping a competitive spirit. The Facility is top-notch. Tom, the owner, spared no expense in getting quality equipment. The gym has gone through many face-lifts and renovations as the need for the gym changes. Now there is a lot of open area to accommodate both the classes and open-gym attendees. Lastly, I have to mention that there are 5 private bathrooms with toilet and shower. That’s a HUGE plus.
