What is CrossFit?

CrossFit, a term that has become synonymous with high-intensity workouts and a tight-knit community, is more than just a fitness regimen. But what exactly is CrossFit? Let’s dive into the world of CrossFit and understand its fundamentals.

The Basics of CrossFit

CrossFit is a branded fitness regimen created by Greg Glassman in 2000. It is a high-intensity, constantly varied, functional movement exercise program that has gained popularity worldwide. The workouts are designed to improve fitness and health by challenging the body in different ways through a mix of aerobic exercise, bodyweight exercises, kettlebells, dumbbells, powerlifiting, bodybuilding, gymnastics and Olympic weightlifting and more!

The CrossFit Philosophy

The philosophy behind CrossFit is to prepare the body not just for the known, but also for the unknown. It aims to build a broad, general, and inclusive fitness foundation. CrossFit defines fitness as increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. This means being capable of performing a variety of tasks efficiently, whether they involve lifting heavy weights, running long distances, or anything in between.

The Workouts

CrossFit workouts, also known as “WODs” (Workouts of the Day), are different each day. Some days are designed to be short and intense, typically lasting 5 to 15 minutes, some are meant to be long and steady.  Some days there is a strength and/or skill that will be worked on. The workouts are scalable, which means they can be adjusted to any fitness level, making CrossFit accessible to people of all ages and physical conditions.

The Community

One of the defining aspects of CrossFit is its community. CrossFit gyms, or “boxes” as they are often called, are known for their supportive and inclusive environment. Members encourage each other during workouts, share tips and advice, and often participate in social events together.

So CrossFit Is…

CrossFit is more than just a workout program; it’s a lifestyle and a community. It’s about pushing your limits, constantly learning and improving, and being part of a supportive community that motivates you to be your best. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast looking for a new challenge or a beginner starting your fitness journey, CrossFit offers a unique and rewarding experience.
